Cycling infra projects

For the advanced bike city, a good cycling network is essential. Well-designed routes to key destinations and connections to other modes of transportation encourage cycling. Establishing a network doesn't have to be daunting; it can be done in steps. Start by dedicating a lane for cyclists or installing bike lanes on the road. Making progress? Then consider implementing a bicycle street, where the maximum speed is 30 km/h and cars are guests. Every location is unique, but there is always a solution.

Bicycle networks - "Groennet"
Did you know bicyclist prefer attractive routes over the fastest ones? They are even willing to cycle 5 minutes more, just to have a pleasant trip. In addition, cyclist tend to be more forgiving about bicycle infrastructure if they enjoy it. One way to develop a comfortable and much used network is by upgrading routes through an interesting environment. We did this in Amsterdam by analyzing these routes, establish its weaknesses and market them to potential users. Making happy cyclists and climate adaptive environments.

"Cycling street, car is guest"

Amsterdam decided to largely replace the car streets on the main cycle routes (Plusnet Fiets) and provide wider cycle paths. The car can still drive there, but it is a 'guest'. The bicycle always has priority.

There is not always a solution.
Or is there?

It is not preferable to sacrifice greenery for parking spaces, but sometimes sacrifices have to be made to keep sidewalks accessible. And therefore safer.

At a location where, due to circumstances, many more bicycle parking spaces need to be created, but at first glance there is no space, interventions can be made in the complete road layout. Ultimately, 1,200 bicycle parking spaces were added here in the South of Amsterdam  without adapting the park or narrowing the street.

Infrastructure adjustments in favor of bicycles
During redevelopment operations, which must take place once every 25 years, space for bicycles takes precedence when it comes to the new street layout.
