Bike parking solutions
We have developed and realized many bicycle parking projects and pilots in recent years for the municipality of Amsterdam.
And you could say; if it works in Amsterdam, it works everywhere. Why? In addition to the fact that Amsterdam has the largest amount of bicycles, most Amsterdam residents are stubborn, hard-headed and have little respect for traffic rules. Therefore it is a challenge to create well-functioning parking facilities, make them easy to find. But also to make them popular in use.
And if it works there, we can make it for you. Anywhere.

One hour parking
In busy shopping areas, where parking is only allowed within a bicycle rack, bicycle compartment (white lines) or bicycle garage (enforcement applies outside these areas), there are always locations that are an exception. For example in front of a supermarket. People park here for 5 or 10 minutes. It requires a solution.
In this case we introduced a 1-hour slot compartment, opposite of the store. Fortunately, the space was there, plus a blank wall to make the announcement. A nice test for us, which we monitored with cameras. And it worked. Shop owner satisfied. Cyclist satisfied. Municipality satisfied. |
The Park & Walk system
As we all know, every cyclist prefers to park right in front of the destination. And that often happens. But if space does not allow this, you should really refer to something further away. But what are you referring to? Which place? We came up with a striking pole with a Park & Walk symbol. The white lined compartment is promoted using several PR means and must be easy to find. Later we equipped the posts with solar panels, so that no more electricity was needed from the street. And made the system more flexible to easily transfer from one location to another. Later, a mobile P+L pole was made that was temporarily placed at bigger events. This made the symbol more widely known and PR wise strengthened the existing system. |
Flex Parking - Bicycle and scooter parking at Cargo Locations.
Many streets in shopping areas have loading and unloading areas for supplies. Outside supply times these places were used for car parking. This was actually Flex Parking, but Amsterdam's Bicycle Parking Team converted this into parking for bicycles and scooters outside loading and unloading times. Good announcement was important, and clear signing. And it works. Amsterdam now has 27 flex parking locations. To our delight, few bicycles are left behind before loading and unloading periodes start.

Accessible bike parking facilities. But... truly accessible bike parking facilities.
Amsterdam is proud of its large and beautifully designed parking facilities. And really, they are beautiful. And spacious! But access to most locations did not appear to meet everyone's expectations. The choice of long stairs with a gutter is a burden for many users. And even made it impossible for disabled cyclists to use them. What becomes painfully clear here is that the design process must take more into account the interests of the cyclist. The group of less mobile residents have been overlooked, and this is now paying off in complaints and low usage. To this day, the occupancy of the garages continues to lag behind forecasts.
We advocate easily accessible parking facilities, preferably suitable for cycling (rolling in). And that can also be done in a safe way.

Pop-up parking with light projection
An invention that we are proud of. Park in spaces that are only visible when they are needed. And this is especially the case for café visitors in the evening. Here, a solution has been devised for the 'bicycle parking mess' caused by café visitors, with a strong light projection.
This solution requires some technical preparation, but once it is installed it will continue to work for years, without maintenance. |
