Smart Bike Parking Rules for a Historic City
As the city of Maastricht continues to develop, new homes, shops, and gyms are opening in old buildings. Great for the city—tricky for bicycle parking.
The municipality asked Bikenine to help design a bicycle parking buy-out scheme that fits the unique challenges of the historic city centre. In many cases, buildings are too small or protected to include indoor bicycle parking. But visitors and residents still need safe, legal places to park their bikes.
To shape the right solution, we interviewed several Dutch cities that had tackled similar problems. We studied their policies and filtered out what would (and wouldn’t) work for Maastricht. The result: a custom buy-out scheme that gives developers clear rules and gives the city more control over bike parking quality and location.
Because in a walkable, bike-friendly city like Maastricht, behavior follows design—and design follows good policy. Bikenine bridges that gap, one tailor-made solution at a time.
