Can you move a bike flat? We found out
Why build a brand-new bicycle parking facility, when you might reuse one that already exists? For the City of Amsterdam and Schiphol, Bikenine led a feasibility study on giving the iconic Amsterdam bike flat a second life. It’s one of the most photographed bike parking structures in the world—so moving it was no small idea.
We focused on the entire process: Can it be taken apart? Can the structure travel over water? Can it be rebuilt somewhere new? We looked closely at the steel construction, tested its structural quality, and mapped the full relocation journey. In the end, reuse wasn’t possible. But that wasn’t failure—it was insight.
This project gave us a deeper understanding of circular infrastructure, modular design, and how cities can rethink existing assets. And that’s exactly what Bikenine stands for: helping cities grow bike-friendly in smart, future-ready ways.
